Carmel Mtn Ranch History
History: This 1,500-acre, master-planned community was approved for development in 1984. The land was once part of a Mexican land grant that dates to the 1820s. It’s east of Rancho Peñasquitos, south of Rancho Bernardo, north of Sabre Springs and west of Poway.
How it got its name: The Carmelite Sisters of Mercy established a dairy farm and monastery in the area in 1905. Carmel Mountain, a biblical reference to Mount Carmel, takes its names from the nuns.
Landmarks: Carmel Mountain Plaza is the center for shopping, dining and entertainment, while the Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club is a place for social gatherings, including weddings. The club’s golf course sets manicured fairways and greens against a backdrop of drought-tolerant landscaping.
Things to do: The upscale Angelika Film Center offers reserved reclining chairs where movie-goers can nosh on items such as kale grilled cheese or deconstructed baked potato fries with sour cream, cheddar cheese and bacon – all washed down with a craft beer, cocktail or cappuccino. You can work it off playing pickleball at the Carmel Mountain Ranch/Sabre Springs Recreation Center, 10152 Rancho Carmel Drive.
Fun fact: Despite its name, Carmel Mountain Ranch is closer to Black Mountain than Carmel Mountain, which lies about 10 miles west.
Notable locals: Former San Diego Socker defender Kevin Crow has called Carmel Mountain Ranch home. The all-star player also played for the U.S. men’s team in the 1984 and 1988 Olympics.
