Children’s Pool Beach, and it’s immediate neighboring beach just a few steps south known as Casa Beach, is a small cove located in La Jolla, California. The beach is super beautiful and one of my favorite spots to photograph. It’s known mostly for it’s very popular, and sometimes noisy residents, the harbor seals and sea lions. But it’s also well recognized in photographs for its clear blue water and gentle surf, which make it a popular destination for swimming and sunbathing.

One of the unique features of Children’s Pool Beach is its population of harbor seals, which are often seen lounging on the sand and swimming in the water. This provides a unique and interesting element for photography, especially for wildlife and nature enthusiasts. This sheltered cove (courtesy of a breakwater built by Ellen Browning Scripps long ago) is a fascinating structure that blocks much of the large surf from disturbing the sandy area where the harbor seals lounge and sleep. Not sure exactly when it happened, but a few years back, this beach was suddenly “discovered” by the seals and has become a major “seal pupping” location.

Children’s Pool Beach is certainly a beautiful and unique location for photography. As with most of the coastal landscape in La Jolla, the scenic cliffs, lush greenery, clear blue waters make this an excellent backdrop for photos. And, thanks to the population of harbor seals, this spot may make for an entertaining family beach photo spot that keeps the kids from getting bored and offers and outing for either before or after your photoshoot session.

It is legendary amongst the the surf industry crowd because years ago it was featured in the movie, “Endless Summer.” Windansea is a picturesque beach known for its beautiful sunsets and clear water. It also has a iconic palm tree and a surf shack, which can make for interesting and unique backgrounds in portraits. Its location is a bit further down the coast so it can be less crowded than some of the other spots, making it a great option for photographers looking for a more secluded spot. Also, there are sandy little sea walls that make finger like jetties out into the water and if you time the low tide just right, you may be lucky enough to capture some great images in between some of these finger like extrusions.
